Union Home Minister Amit Shah officially handed over the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) flag to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday, marking Meghalaya as the host of the 39th National Games in 2027.
The handover took place during the closing ceremony of the 38th National Games in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, in the presence of medalists and members of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association.
Meghalaya in the 38th National Games secured five medals—one gold, two silver, and two bronze. Hosting the Games in 2027 will be a significant milestone as the state celebrates its 55th year of statehood.
Amit Shah highlighted Meghalaya’s unique approach to the Games, stating that while most events will be held in the state, certain disciplines will be hosted in other North Eastern states to foster regional unity. “This initiative will go a long way in promoting unity among the North Eastern states,” he remarked.
Expressing gratitude, CM Conrad Sangma shared his excitement on X, stating, “Receiving the IOA flag is an honour. Our journey has been incredible, and what was once a dream is now a reality. Meghalaya is proud to be the host of the 39th National Games.”
The event marks a significant step in Meghalaya’s sporting journey, reflecting its growing presence in India’s athletic landscape.
