Half way into its 5-year term, the BJP in Assam has demonstrated its grassroots support base by sweeping the Panchayat polls in the state at all levels.

The Congress has put up a spirited fight to be on the second place. The AGP, that had snapped ties with the BJP for the panchayat polls, seems to have lost the game, emerging a distant third.

Assam’s fourth major political party, the AIUDF, has hardly been able to put up a fight.

As per the latest figures, the BJP is ahead in as many as 201 Zila Parishad seats followed by the Congress with 102.

The BJP has captured 8 Zila Parishads in Sivasagar district. On the other hand the Congress has been able to hold on to 3 Zila parishads in the district.

Out of 20 Zila Parishad seats, the BJP has won 12 seats in Tinsukia, the party is leading in another 8 seats.

In Biswanath, the BJP has won 7 out of 13 Zila Parishads and is also leading in the other 6 Zila Parishad seats.

AGP’s poor performance was also witnessed in one of its stronghold, the Sonitpur district with the BJP making inroads with 11 Zila Parishad seats so far and is leading in 4 other Zila Parishad seats.

Meanwhile, the Congress is leading in 4 other ZP seats whereas the AGP failed to win or take lead even in a single seat.

The regional party’s failure in the home district of top AGP leader Brindaban Goswami has assumed significance ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

However, the Congress turned the tables in Jorhat winning 12 out of the 19 Zilla Parishads.
