In a significant crackdown on wildlife smuggling, Assam Police have arrested 4 persons with rhino horn weighing approximately 1.4 kg in Merapani in Golaghat district.
They were arrested from Tarani Kalyanpur in Merapani on Sunday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Farooq Ali, Noor Jamal, Binod Barua, and Rupam Barua.
Further investigation is underway to determine the extent of their involvement in wildlife trafficking and if there are any larger networks involved.
The illegal trade of rhino horns is one of the major environmental issues in India.
In september last year, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Kaziranga and other protected habitats of the one-horned rhino in Assam recorded an 86 percent drop in poaching of the herbivore since 2016.
