Assam Intensifies Crackdown on Child Marriage: 416 Arrested in Third Phase

Authorities arrested 416 individuals and registered 335 cases related to child marriage during this phase.
Assam’s relentless fight against child marriage saw a significant development during the third phase of operations conducted on the night of December 21-22. Authorities arrested 416 individuals and registered 335 cases related to child marriage during this phase.
The arrested individuals are scheduled to be produced in court today.
Sharing the development on his X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasised the government’s unwavering determination to end child marriage. “We will continue to take bold steps to eradicate this social evil,” the Chief Minister declared, reiterating his administration’s focus on creating a safe and just environment for young girls in the state.
It may be mentioned that nearly 5000 people had been arrested in the previous two phases of crackdown against child marriage in Assam. The crackdown began on February last year. In the first phase 3900 people were arrested and in the second phase 1039 persons were arrested.
