Centre Extends Deadline for Manipur Violence Inquiry Commission to 20 May 2025

Previously, the MHA had given the commission until November 20, 2024, to submit its findings.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has extended the deadline for the three-member judicial commission investigating the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, asking it to submit its report by May 20, 2025.
The MHA in a gazette notification today said, “In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952 (60 of 1952), the Central Government hereby makes the following amendment in the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs number S.O. 2424 (E), dated June 4, 2023… The Commission shall submit its report to the Central Government as soon as possible but not later than May 20, 2025.”
The commission, headed by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice (retired) Ajai Lamba, along with members, retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar, was formed on June 4, 2023, to investigate the violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, leading to the deaths of at least 258 people.
The inquiry commission was initially directed to submit its report within six months of its full sitting, which began on November 20, 2023.
Previously, the MHA had given the commission until November 20, 2024, to submit its findings, but it has now extended the deadline to May 20, 2025.
The commission is tasked with examining the causes and spread of violence and riots between different communities, as well as investigating any lapses or dereliction of duty by state authorities.
