Manipur Unrest: Women Folk Stages Protest, Demand Withdrawal of Charges Against Arambai Tenggol Chief

Women in several Valley districts staged sit-ins and protest rallies, demanding the immediate withdrawal of cases filed by the NIA against Arambai Tengol Chief, Korounganba Khuman. The protests, held in locations like Laphupat Tera, Wangoi in Imphal West, and Wabagai and Kakching Khunou in Kakching District, saw demonstrators carrying placards and chanting slogans in solidarity with Arambai Tenggol.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Exclusively, a women leader highlighted the insecurity faced by the Meitei community, despite the deployment of 288 CAPF personnel in the region. She pointed to the recent disappearance of a senior Assam-based Meitei officer from an Army camp at Leimakhong as evidence of the prevailing vulnerability.
The leader defended Arambai Tengol, stating that the group did not initially take up arms during the onset of violence but was compelled to do so to protect the community from attacks by Kuki armed groups.
She stated, “288 CRPF and the BSF companies are here in Manipur still the people of Manipur especially Meitei people are not safe recently in the Lemakong area from army camp one Meitei man goes missing but still we did not find the person. From the beginning of the violence, the Arambai Tiangol did not take off arms and ammunition. In order to protect our people Arambai Tangol took off arms ammunition from the severe attack of the Kuki terrorists to protect the Meitei people. So, we demand to withdraw the case against Arambay Tiangol and its chief Korongwambakuman, we request the government of India to withdraw the case.”
The protesters called for the Government of India to intervene and revoke the charges against Arambai Tengol and its chief, emphasising their belief in the organisation’s role as a protector of the Meitei community during times of unrest.
