The protest extended to a march through the streets of Kailashahar, amplifying demands for justice and the release of Chinmoy Das.
Trade with Bangladesh through the Kailashahar border in Unakoti district of Tripura have been suspended indefinitely as Sanatani Hindus staged a large-scale protest against atrocities on minorities in the neighboring country.
The protesters gathered at the Manu Land Customs Station (LCS) on Wednesday to voice their opposition to the arrest of ISKCON preacher Chinmoy Das and the continued persecution of minorities including Hindus in Bangladesh.
Led by prominent leaders like Kailashahar Municipal Council vice chairman Nitish Dey, BJP Kailashahar Mandal president Siddhartha Dey, senior advocate Sandeep Debroy, and Hindu Jagran Manch Tripura President Uttam Dey, the demonstration saw significant participation from the community. Social activists Bidhan Das, Dulal Das, and Milan Das were also actively involved.
The demonstrators raised slogans against the interim government in Bangladesh led by Nobel laureate Dr. Yunus, accusing it of failing to protect minority communities.
The protest extended to a march through the streets of Kailashahar, amplifying demands for justice and the release of Chinmoy Das.
Speaking to reporters, Nitish Dey condemned the arrest as unjust and vowed to continue the agitation until their demands were met.
“We demand the unconditional release of Chinmoy Das immediately. Trade with Bangladesh will not resume until the attacks on Hindus are stopped,” he declared.
The protesters further urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take a firm stance and halt all business with Bangladesh until minority communities are safeguarded.
Tripura, which shares an 856-kilometer-long border with Bangladesh, serves as a crucial hub for cross-border trade.
To ensure law and order during the protest, heavy security, including police, TSR, and BSF personnel, was deployed under the supervision of Kailashahar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Jayanta Karmakar.
The indefinite suspension of trade via the Kailashahar border is expected to have repercussions on the local economy and bilateral relations, marking a significant development in the ongoing tension over minority rights in Bangladesh.
