The project represents a significant milestone in India-Bangladesh relations, emphasizing mutual economic and strategic benefits.

The Sabroom Land Port, a crucial infrastructure project in southern Tripura, which has been delayed due to political instability in Bangladesh, is likely to be inaugurated soon, Aditya Mishra, Chairman of the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), said.

Speaking at the “Building Bridges: Trade and Connectivity Through Land Port Sabroom” conference in Sabroom, South Tripura, on Tuesday, Mishra explained that the port, along with its associated corridor, was ready for operation and initially scheduled for inauguration on August 14. However, the change in political regime in neighbouring Bangladesh has caused significant delays.

“Efforts are ongoing to inaugurate the land port at the earliest. This connectivity is not just crucial for boosting trade but also for promoting tourism between the two nations,” Mishra told reporters on the sidelines of the event, which was attended by stakeholders, including the Border Security Force (BSF).

Despite the delays, Mishra expressed optimism, stating that close cooperation between India and Bangladesh continues, and the Sabroom land port is expected to become operational by the end of this year or early next year.

“The situation in Bangladesh has been somewhat unstable, but the longstanding relations between the two nations are a foundation for progress. This route will bring immense benefits to both countries once operational,” he added.

Sabroom, located approximately 70 km from Bangladesh’s Chittagong port, is set to become a key connectivity hub.

The Indian government has already completed the 1.9 km-long Maitree Setu (Friendship Bridge) over the Feni River, linking Sabroom with Ramgarh in Bangladesh. Once the land port is operational, it is expected to transform Sabroom into India’s gateway to Southeast Asia, facilitating cross-border trade and regional integration.

The project represents a significant milestone in India-Bangladesh relations, emphasizing mutual economic and strategic benefits. Local businesses and stakeholders eagerly await its inauguration, hoping it will unlock new opportunities for growth and cooperation.
