Thieves strike Ugratara temple in Guwahati, decamp with precious idol

In a sensational incident, as many as four thieves looted the historic Ugratara Temple in Guwahati’s Latashil area on Thursday night.

The thieves along with several other items also stole the idol of Goddess Tara which was being built with 8 precious metals.

Notably, the historic temple was built during the Ahom era in Assam in the year in 1725 AD by Ahom King Siva Singha.

The Ugratara temple which was looted on Thursday night is the only temple in the entire country, where Goddess Tara is being worshiped.

Ugratara in Assam is generally identified as Tiksna-Kanta, Eka-Jata, etc. of the Buddhist pantheon.

The theft in the Ugratara Temple was caught in the CCTV cameras of the temple. On the other hand the police have started investigation into the sensational theft incident.

Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged in regards to the theft incident in the Ugratara Temple.

Speaking on the incident, Guwahati Commissioner of Police Pradeep Saloi said that investigation into the incident has started and have also registered a case.
