Thousands Participate in Silent Coffin Rally in Churachandpur Demanding Justice for 10 Killed in Jiribam Shootout

Thousands of people took to the streets of Churachandpur today in a Silent Coffin Rally organized by the Joint Philanthropic Organisation (JPO), seeking justice for the 10 armed men killed in a shootout with CRPF personnel in Jiribam on November 11, 2024.
The rally, which saw widespread public participation, was a show of solidarity for the deceased and a call for accountability from the authorities.
The procession, which began at 11 am from the Churachandpur Public Ground, featured dummy coffins representing the 10 victims. It was flagged off by H. Sangpi, President of the Young Vaiphei Association. The marchers carried the coffins through the town, with participants carrying placards demanding justice for the victims and for equal rights for the indigenous people of the region.
The rally culminated at the Wall of Remembrance, where a memorandum was submitted to Union Home Minister Amit Shah through the Deputy Commissioner, Dharun Kumar. The memorandum called for an investigation into the killings and for justice to be served.
The rally also raised concerns about the post-mortem reports of the deceased, which were conducted at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in Assam.
“We are gathering here together organising a rally in protest against the killing of 10 village volunteers in Jiribam by CRPF personnel. All the bodies were taken to the SMCH for post-proterm and then brought back to Churachandpur but where are the post-proterm reports? I question the concerned authority to hand over the post-mortem reports so that we can perform the last rites of our beloved brothers,” one of the rally participants said.
“We are the indigenous people of this land. We are not foreigners. Our forefathers fought for the independence of this country, and we should be treated equally. Equal justice and equal rights must be given to the tribals as well,” she added.
The JPO has vowed to continue its efforts for justice, with hopes that the government will respond to the community’s demands and ensure transparency in the investigation.
