Manipur Violence: Assam-Manipur Border Sealed

First Published: 19th November, 2024 14:07 IST

Cachar SP, Numal Mahatta, is overseeing the security measures and has emphasized that forces are on high alert.

The inter-state border between Assam’s Cachar district and Manipur’s Jiribam district has been completely sealed following intelligence reports warning of potential disturbances.

To ensure security and prevent unrest, Assam Police commandos and police battalion units have been deployed along the border.

Cachar SP, Numal Mahatta, is overseeing the security measures and has emphasized that forces are on high alert.

Local administrations and Village Defence Parties (VDPs) have also been mobilized to monitor the situation and prevent any infiltration from the conflict-ridden Jiribam district in Manipur. These steps are being taken to maintain peace and order in the region amidst rising tensions.

SP Mahatta emphasised that the ethnic clashes in Manipur should not affect the law and order situation in Cachar.

He stated, “We have deployed police personnel and commandos for patrolling the bordering areas. Our primary concern is to prevent anti-social elements with disruptive agendas from entering the district. Peace and tranquillity within Cachar are our top priorities, and we are working round the clock to ensure this.”

He added, “We have not received reports of any relief camps being set up yet. However, we have held meetings with village committees and local organisations, instructing them to alert the administration about any migration or settlement of residents from the neighbouring state.”

It needs to be mentioned that violence erupted in Jiribam from November 7 and peaked on November 11 in the Borobekra sub-division of Jiribam district, where armed miscreants attacked a relief camp and CRPF posts and abducted three women and three children who were later found dead.

This plunged Imphal into chaos and is still on the edge since November 16.
