NEHU Crisis: Professors Reject VC Shukla’s Offer of Pro-VC Posts at Tura and Shillong Campuses

Prof SM Shungoh said she rejected the offer and all teachers support the students and their demands
Shillong’s North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Professors, Dr Fameline K Marak and Professor SM Shungoh, have declined embattled Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla’s offer to be appointed as Pro-Vice Chancellors at NEHU’s Tura and Shillong campuses respectively.
Addressing the students today morning at NEHU’s Shillong campus, Prof SM Shungoh clearly stated that she rejected the offer and that all teachers support the students and their demands.
“We are here for you. We applaud and thank the students body for taking up the issues and everything you do, you have the support of NEHUTA (NEHU Teachers’ Association), MeTTA (Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association). We hope and pray that this University will once again grow. I would like to inform you all that I have not accepted the offer,” Prof Shungoh said.
It may be mentioned that VC Shukla had made the offer to Prof Marak and Prof Shungoh on Wednesday as the students have demanded appointment of Pro VCs in the two campuses.
Earlier, both the Professors had informed that have not received any official communication regarding their appointment and that they came to know about such a development only through social media posts.
Sources said that both professors believe that the notification mentioning their appointments signed by the Assistant Registrar in Charge lacks the necessary authority to issue such a communication.
Without an official notice from the proper channels, such a notification holds no significance according to both the professors, sources added.
If sources are to be believed, both professors clearly maintained that they would not allow themselves to be manipulated by individuals resorting to ‘desperate measures’ and refused to be a pawn in any personal or political agenda.
Sources said that both Marak and Shungoh have affirmed that they will never take any action that could undermine the dedication of the students to the cause.
Earlier, last night, soon after VC Shukla surprised the university community with the appointment of two Pro Vice Chancellors amid the ongoing indefinite hunger strike by students, the North Eastern Hill University Students Union (NEHUSU) and NEHUTA outrightly rejected his decision.
The agitating students who have been on an indefinite strike for the last 10 days have boycotted the appointments alleging that the Pro VCs have been made by flouting standard rules.
General secretary of the NEHUSU Toniho Kharsati, speaking to Northeast Live, condemned VC Shukla’s decision and said that the hunger strike will continue until the latter is removed from the post.
The protesting students are demanding the immediate resignation of Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla and other top officials, citing allegations of mismanagement, corruption, and administrative failure under his leadership.
