Villagers from 21 villages in the West Khasi Hills took part in a protest march yesterday to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), opposing a recent delimitation exercise that forcibly reallocated them from the Mawshynrut constituency to the Rambrai constituency. The protest, organized by the Joint Action Committee (Misei, Mawsmai, Langdongdai), was sparked by strong local opposition to the decision, which the villagers argue disrupts their traditional affiliations and governance.

Armed with placards, the demonstrators staged a sit-in on the road in front of the KHADC premises, causing traffic disruptions. When the protesters were prevented from entering the KHADC office, some public members expressed their discontent by blocking their way. The affected villages—Misei, Langdongdai, and Mawsmai—had previously been part of Mawshynrut but were reassigned to Rambrai-Jyrngam after the recent delimitation.

Jeremiia Dkhar, Chairman of the Joint Action Committee, led the protest and submitted a formal memorandum to KHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member P.N. Syiem. The villagers voiced concerns that the reassignment disregarded their long-standing political and cultural ties to Mawshynrut and called for the restoration of their original constituency.

One committee member emphasized, “We have decided to protest because the KHADC has ignored our demands. We want to remain with Mawshynrut. Our rights cannot be disregarded by the KHADC’s select committee.” In response, Deputy Chief Executive Member P.N. Syiem has agreed to open a dialogue with the protesters and assured that the matter will be reviewed.
