The protesting students asserted that their strike is not just a demand for change but a fight for their democratic rights on campus.

After the students of North East Hill University sitting on indefinite hunger strike accusing Vice Chancellor Prof P S Shukla of mismanagement and seeking his removal, students of Sikkim University today launched an indefinite hunger strike outside the administrative building at 6th Mile, Gangtok, to protest the university’s alleged neglect in addressing pressing concerns of the students.

The protesting students asserted that their strike is not just a demand for change but a fight for their democratic rights on campus. They have pledged to continue until the university takes decisive action on their grievances.

The students cited several unresolved issues, including demands for administrative accountability, enhanced safety measures, and protection of their democratic rights. This protest follows a recent tragic incident that, according to students, highlights major shortcomings in the university’s approach to student welfare.

Jasiel Sethling Yakthungba, a third-semester International Relations student, accused university administrators of ignoring deadlines and disregarding repeated student appeals. “We are demanding justice for our fallen comrade and our rightful student rights,” Yakthungba said.

“This hunger strike is a stand for the democratic rights of students, and it will continue until our demands are met. The Fact-Finding Committee should include members from the student community, as there was a lack of adequate medical facilities on campus.” Among the students’ primary demands is the reconstitution of the Fact-Finding Committee.

They argued that the existing committee has inadequately addressed concerns regarding the recent death on campus and that a fresh, independent inquiry is necessary to ensure accountability and meaningful reforms.
