Bhutan's PM Tobgay welcomed the operationalisation of the ICP at Darranga which will boost tourism and economic development.
In a big boost to India-Bhutan and Bhutan-Assam ties, the Immigration Check Post in Darranga in Assam on the India-Bhutan border was inaugurated today in the presence of Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay, Governor of Assam, Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita.
It may be recalled that during the visit of His Majesty the King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, to India in November 2023, the two sides had agreed to designate Darranga and Samdrup Jongkharin in Bhutan as Immigration Check Post between Bhutan and India to facilitate the entry and exit of third country nationals by land route.
In his address at the event, Prime Minister Tobgay welcomed the operationalisation of the Immigration Check Post at Darranga which will boost tourism and economic development in eastern Bhutan and thanked the Government of India for its efforts in promoting greater connectivity in the region.
Prime Minister Tobgay stated, “The opening of the Immigration Check Post is essentially an Indian facility, but we see it as a joint initiative. This will enhance tourism, strengthen person-to-person ties between the two countries, and boost the business sector and the friendship between the people of India and Bhutan. This development, in particular, will benefit the people of Assam and eastern Bhutan.”
Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita said, “This ICP will definitely strengthen people-to-people ties and enhance trade and commerce between the two countries. This initiative will especially ease the movement of tourists from third countries. India and Bhutan have had strong bilateral connections for many years, and under Prime Minister Modi’s government, the relationship between the countries has become even stronger than before.”
During the inauguration, Governor of Assam, Lakshman Prasad Acharya underlined the long-standing ties of friendship between Bhutan and India and recent initiatives for cross border infrastructure development and enhancing people to people connectivity. He reiterated Government of India’s commitment to expand the partnership further based on the priorities of the Royal Government of Bhutan.
The inauguration ceremony was also graced by MoS for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Leader of Opposition of Bhutan, Dasho Pema Chewang, elected representatives from India and Bhutan and senior officials from both countries.
