Sikkim Woman Dies By Suicide Unable to Bear Losses Post GLOF

At least 95 people were killed, several displaced and at least 75 people were reported missing post the GLOF.

Unable to bear the financial losses caused by the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that had struck Sikkim in 2023, a 55-year-old woman, reportedly died by suicide on 4th November.

The floods triggered by the GLOF, which occurred on October 3-4 last year, swept away her home along with 13 cows and 4 goats, dealing a big blow to her finances and livelihood. Post this the lady went into prolonged period of depression.

According to police, the woman hanged herself in the bathroom of her home in Chubombu, Chungthang.

Police investigation revealed that since the GLOF disaster, the deceased had been struggling with grief and was often seen crying. On the day of the incident, she was alone at home while her family members were away at work. Later that evening her elder son found her body hanging when he returned home.

Chungthang Police have registered the case and the investigation is ongoing.
