Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon to Push for Inner Line Permit Implementation in Meghalaya

First Published: 25th October, 2024 12:03 IST

The call for ILP in Meghalaya has been driven by concerns over the rapid influx of people from outside the state.

Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon has announced plans to raise the issue of implementing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in Meghalaya at the national level, aiming to address growing public demands for enhanced measures to protect the indigenous population’s interests.

Speaking to reporters, Syngkon confirmed that while he has engaged in discussions on ILP informally, he has yet to bring the issue to the formal level, such as in Parliament. “This issue needs to be addressed in an appropriate forum,” Syngkon stated, “and I am committed to raising it in Parliament soon to ensure that the concerns of our people are heard.”

The call for ILP in Meghalaya has been driven by concerns over the rapid influx of people from outside the state, which many locals fear could dilute indigenous cultures and put undue pressure on limited resources. For years, various civil society groups, including the Khasi Students Union and many others, have campaigned for the implementation of ILP in Meghalaya to address these issues.

The ILP, currently in effect in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Manipur, restricts the entry of non-residents into these states, helping regulate the inflow of people .
