The blockade occurred in the 36-mile area, under the jurisdiction of Mungiakami Police Station in Teliamura Subdivision.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the Assam-Agartala National Highway (NH-8) in Khowai district on Thursday as tribal women staged a protest demanding a supply of clean drinking water. The blockade occurred in the 36-mile area, under the jurisdiction of Mungiakami Police Station in Teliamura Subdivision.

The protesters reported facing a severe shortage of clean drinking water for over a month, forcing villagers to rely on stream water and stored water from various sources, which has led to the spread of diseases in the area. Despite repeated appeals to authorities, no effective action has been taken, prompting the villagers to block the highway in a bid to draw attention to their plight.

These remote areas frequently suffer from water shortages, and past protests have yielded similar promises from the administration, yet tangible solutions remain elusive.

The protest disrupted traffic for several hours and even delayed the Chief Minister’s convoy, although the Chief Minister was travelling by train to attend an event in Ambassa, Dhalai district. The blockade was lifted after officials from the Teliamura Subdivision administration and Mungiakami police intervened and assured the residents that clean water would be provided.

However, frustration remains high among the villagers, who are increasingly frustrated by the administration’s unfulfilled promises regarding this critical issue.
