NPF Applauds Manipur Government’s Decision to Expedite Long-Delayed ADC Elections

The Naga People’s Front (NPF) Manipur State Unit has expressed its appreciation for the Hill Area Committee (HAC)’s recommendation urging the Manipur Government to conduct the long-pending Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections at the earliest.
In a press release, the party emphasized that postponing the elections undermines the democratic rights of grassroots communities and hinders the smooth functioning of local administration. According to their release, restoring local self-government through timely elections is essential to delivering justice to the people of the hill areas.
The elections for the six ADCs Chandel, Churachandpur, Sadar Hills (Kangpokpi), Manipur North (Senapati), Tamenglong, and Ukhrul have been overdue since 2020. The party reiterated its stance from an earlier statement made on August 5, 2024, calling for the elections to be conducted as per the Cabinet decision dated June 13, 2024.
However, the Manipur Naga Youth Organisation (MNYO), issuing a statement on October 20, opposed the October 14 HAC resolution recommendation. The MNYO criticized the formation of temporary ADC committees without proper consultation or representation, calling it undemocratic and detrimental to grassroots governance. The organization has urged the Manipur Governor, as the custodian of Article 371(C), to intervene in the matter.
In its press release, the NPF also reiterated its opposition to the proposed construction of the Indo-Myanmar border fencing in Naga areas without first rectifying the traditional boundaries. The party expressed concern over the impact of such a move on the local communities and urged the government to take corrective action.
