Tripura CM Manik Saha Announces Rs 25 Cr in Flood Relief Amid Opposition Criticism

Opposition leaders said that the central relief allocation does not address the long-term issues facing the state.

Amid mounting opposition pressure accusing the central of neglecting Tripura’s flood crisis, Chief Minister Manik Saha today announced that the state has received Rs 25 crore in relief funds.

This financial support is part of the Rs 675 crore package recently announced by the Centre for flood-affected regions, including Gujarat, Manipur, and Tripura, said CM Saha speaking to media in Agartala.

This comes in the wake of devastating floods that recently ravaged the state, causing an estimated loss of Rs 14,000 crore and claiming 39 lives.

CM Saha said that the Rs 25 crore allocation marks the second instalment of aid after an advance of Rs 40 crore was released to the State Disaster Management’s annual fund last month.

“Today, we received information regarding the allocation of Rs 25 crore for flood restoration, in addition to the Rs 40 crore that had been sanctioned earlier,” said CM Saha.

He emphasized that the funds will be used to restore essential infrastructure and support flood-affected families across the state.

As Tripura continues to grapple with the aftermath of the catastrophic floods, worst in the state in 67 years since 1956, opposition- the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M) and Tripura Pradesh Congress have intensified their campaigns against the ruling government, accusing it of neglecting the state’s challenges, including natural disasters, rising unemployment, and ongoing financial instability.

Opposition leaders said that the central relief allocation does not address the long-term issues facing the state.

Yesterday, Congress organized a mass deputation in Agartala, demanding adequate compensation for various affected groups.

It called for specific support to the working class, farming community, fishery owners, and those involved in livestock, alongside compensation for the families of the 39 individuals who lost their lives due to landslides and drowning during the floods.

The CPI(M) also attacked the ruling BJP on several fronts, including its handling of the flood crisis, unemployment, financial mismanagement, corruption, and the declining law and order situation in the state.
