The blockade was initiated to demand the full functioning of the SDO office at the Tousem Sub-Division headquarters.
The indefinite blockade on NH-37, which was enforced by the Joint Civil Organizations (JCO) of Tousem Sub-Division from September 25, has been lifted after a pivotal meeting between civil society organizations (CSOs) and the Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong on September 26, 2024.
The blockade was initiated to demand the full functioning of the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) office at the Tousem Sub-Division headquarters. During the meeting, several agreements were reached to address the grievances of the Tousem residents.
The agreement was signed by key representatives, including the Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong, the SDO of Tousem, the Chairman of RNCM-TML Zone, the Education Secretary of TASO, the General Secretary of ZSOM, the President of Zeme Naga Council, the Advisor of THSU, and the President of CSV.
Key points of the agreement include a request to the appropriate authorities for permission to use the existing office building, staff quarters, bank building, and police department structures in Tousem HQ, which are currently under inquiry. Once approved, government support will be sought to renovate these buildings.
The deadline for making the SDO office fully functional in Tousem is set for November 10, 2024. The CSOs have warned that if this deadline is not met, they will resume their agitation. Additionally, the CSOs requested a meeting with the Chief Minister within seven days to discuss the issue further.
With these agreements in place, the indefinite bandh along NH-37 has been lifted immediately, marking a significant step toward resolving the issue and restoring normalcy .
