In a first, an Arunachal Court Grants Death Penalty to a Former Hostel Warden Accused of Raping and Molesting 21 School Students

The warden along with two others were found guilty of raping 6 boarders and molesting 15 boys and girls at the school way back in November 2022.

In a historic first, an Arunachal sessions court today granted death sentence to Yumken Bagra, the prime accused in the rape and molestation of as many as 21 school students of a government residential school in Shi Yomi diatrict way back in November 2022.

The other two accused, Marbom Ngomdir, the Hindi teacher and Singtung Yorpen, the headmaster of Karo Government Residential School, were sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in the crime.

The death penalty order issued by the special (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) POCSO court at Yupia is subject to confirmation by the Gauhati High Court.

The order is expected to have far reaching impact on similar horrific incidents in the state and the region.

The incident took place in a Residential School in Karo Manigong Circle in Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The three men were found guilty of raping 6 boarders and molesting 15 boys and girls at the school.

The crime came to light in November 2022 when a parent filed a complaint at the Monigong Police Station stating that Bagra had attempted to rape his twin daughters and had sexually abused, tortured, and molested them while they were in the residential school.

Yumken Bagra, was the warden of the hostel from 2019 to 2022 in the residential school, when he was allegedly involved in the misdeeds.

Bagra was arrested after the two FIRs were lodged at the Tato Police Station in the Shi Yomi District back in November 2022. Bagra is accused of raping, molesting and sexually harassing boys and girls in the age group of 6 to 14 years.

Yumken Bagra was convicted under Sections 328 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as Sections 6, 10, and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and he received a death sentence due to the severity of his crimes.

Marbom Ngomdir was found guilty under Section 506 of the IPC and Sections 17 and 21(1) of the POCSO Act. Singtung Yorpen, the former headmaster of Karo Government Residential School, was convicted under Sections 17 and 21(2) of the POCSO Act.

The initial investigation of this pivotal case received momentum under the leadership of Irak Bagra, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Shi-Yomi, along with his dedicated team, and Abhimanyu Poswal, SP of West Siang, and his staff, before it was entrusted to the Crime Branch Police Station Special Investigation Team (SIT).
