Manipur Violence: Rocket Attack Kills one, CM Convenes Emergency Cabinet Meeting

Violence in Manipur is fast escalating and the situation seems to be getting out of hand. Since 4:30 PM today, there has been a rocket attack at the house of Manipur’s first Chief Minister M Koireng, killing a priest and injuring at least five people. Amid reports of drones hovering over nine locations of the state, Chief Minister N Biren Singh chaired an emergency security and cabinet meeting in Imphal.

The security meeting was attended by Security Adviser Kuldiep Singh, DGP Rajiv Singh and several top Manipur Police officials.

As per intelligence reports, arms and ammunitions are being supplied from across the international border of Myanmar.

Amid the worsening law and order situation, educational institutes have been shut across the state.
Earlier in the day, thousands including school children and advocates formed a human chain to protest the use of drones against civilians. A a 31-year-old woman had died and her 12-year old daughter and several others were injured in the drone attack in Koutruk village on September 1.

The human chain was organised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI). The valley-based organisation has declared public emergency in the state.

Fresh violence broke out in the state on September 1, when militants attacked civilians by dropping bombs using drones.
