Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Registers Rs 350 Cr Loss Annually, Government to Review Operations

CM Sangma said that the state government is actively exploring all available options to address the financial challenges of MeCL.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has revealed that the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is currently incurring a huge loss of Rs 350 crore per year.

However, he emphasized that this trend is a significant improvement compared to previous years and expressed optimism to bring down the amount of loss in the near future.

“Previous years’ number of losses are–744 crore, then 542 crore and currently in 350 core, so if you compare the numbers, in a systematic way, we are moving towards improvement and we are hopeful that we will be able to bring down the number of loses in the future,” said CM Sangma.

The Chief Minister said that the state government is actively exploring all available options to address the financial challenges of MeECL, including reviewing the corporation’s operational courses. But whatever, the government will decide will be with the knowledge and overall consensus of all stakeholders.

“We are looking at all the options, including courses of MeECL. We are in touch with stakeholders and employees, and we are at a very advanced stage of discussion. However, any decision we make will be with the knowledge and overall consensus of all stakeholders,” said the Chief Minister.
