Congress will be wiped out: Meghalaya Dy CM and NPP Leader Sniawbhalang Dhar

First Published: 22nd August, 2024 18:23 IST

"With the public's increasing support for the NPP, the Congress's presence in Meghalaya will naturally erode,” Dhar said

Sounding confident, reflecting the growing confidence of the National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya, Deputy Chief Minister and NPP leader Sniawbhalang Dhar, has predicted that the Congress will eventually be wiped out from the state.

The NPP leader’s statement comes close in the heels of 3 Congress MLAs quitting the party and joining NPP.

“With the public’s increasing support for the NPP, the Congress’s presence in Meghalaya will naturally erode. It’s the public who will wipe them out, not us”, Dhar said responding to a question if the NPP has any specific plans to dismantle the Congress.

The NPP is continuing on its plan and strategy to further solidify its political base ahead of the upcoming elections in 2028. “Our focus is on strengthening NPP’s own position”, Dhar said.

Confident about his party’s chances in the coming elections, Dhar extended an invitation to Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee President Vincent H Pala to join the NPP.

Dhar also took the opportunity to address accusations of ‘horse trading’ levelled by opposition parties, which have accused the state government of neglecting development in areas represented by opposition legislators. He firmly denied these claims stating “These accusations of horse trading are baseless. The state government has not neglected development in areas represented by opposition legislators. In fact, three Congress legislators joined the NPP to pursue more development opportunities, knowing that aligning with the ruling party would allow them to receive additional resources.”
