GMCH joins nationwide protests over Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case

First Published: 16th August, 2024 19:15 IST

The protest included a signature campaign, calling for urgent legislative action to ensure the safety of medical professionals

In a show of solidarity with the rape and murder victim of RG Hospital, Kolkata, junior doctors of Guwahati Medical College and Hospital staged a demonstration today demanding immediate implementation of stricter safety laws for healthcare workers.

The protest included a signature campaign, calling for urgent legislative action to ensure the safety of medical professionals. Additionally, the demonstrators demanded the harshest possible punishment for those responsible for the heinous crime in Kolkata.

“Signature campaign is for the noble cause. All the essential services are running with the help of senior faculty. We, the interns, junior and senior residents of specialty and super specialty are here to support the cause” said one junior doctor.

Feeling horrified and dejected by the incident, one female medical student stated, “I feel nihilistic. It has now gone beyond reaction. How can we assume we are safe as women, especially as women doctors? What about the crime that lurks in every corner of this institute or on the streets? Today it’s a doctor; tomorrow, it might be a common person, and it may go unreported. We are just hoping this great nation will provide some form of justice to the victim and give us assurance in the form of a central protection act. Our only wish is to serve our patients better, and that those responsible for our protection do their jobs.”

The widespread response underscores a growing national demand for enhanced protection and justice for healthcare workers across India.
