Meghalaya Govt Promises Action if USTM Found to Have Triggered Floods In Guwahati

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed Guwahati's worsening waterlogging to activities involving the cutting down of hills and forestry on the USTM campus.
Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) allegedly triggering floods in Guwahati, Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma today assured that the state government will take appropriate action if it is found that USTM’s activities have contributed to the flooding.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast live, Minister Sangma refused to comment on this but emphasized that the government will first ascertain whether the allegations against USTM are accurate or baseless. If USTM’s activities have had an adverse impact on the floods in Guwahati, the state will address the issue in accordance with the findings.
When asked if the Meghalaya Government will seek any clarification from USTM regarding this, he said that the government is not seeking immediate clarification from the institute but observing further developments before making any conclusive decisions.
Earlier, on Facebook Live, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed the city’s worsening waterlogging to activities involving the cutting down of hills and forestry on campus of USTM to erect new buildings, including a medical institution.
CM Sarma said that new buildings for the university campus can be created without cutting the hills.
He also called upon the USTM authorities to ensure the flow of excess rainwater goes towards the hills and not towards Guwahati and Jorabat.
