Ginger & Areca Nut Imports From Neighouring Countries Hurting Mizoram Farmers: RS MP K Vanlavena

Flagging issues faced by farmers of Mizoram and northeast due to import of ginger from China and areca nut from the neighbouring countries, Rajya Sabha MP from the state, K. Vanlalvena said that the import of ginger from China is hurting farmers of northeast. He called for an immediate end to the import of these products from abroad.

Vanlalvena raised the issue during his speech at the Zero Hour.

Vanlalvena said that Northeast farmers are facing difficulties in selling their fresh crops of ginger and areca nut due to import of these crops from neighbouring countries; and added that these two crops are the main source of livelihood for the North East people.

The MP also called on the Central Government to immediately stop its huge import of ginger from China; and further exclaimed that this unnecessary import of ginger and areca nut from foreign countries has destroyed the employment of farmers in the Northeast.

Furthermore, Vanlalvena stated that people in the North East believed that India-Myanmar border smugglers and government officials are believed to be involved in the smuggling of these crops across the border.
