Bangladesh Violence: Meghalaya evacuates 67 students, CM Sangma in constant touch with people from the state stranded in neighbouring country

The Meghalaya government has activated a helpline number- 1800-345-3644 for those who may require help due to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.

Meghalaya has evacuated 67 of its students from violence-hit Bangladesh, the neighbouring country that has been on the boil for over a week now due to protests by students demanding reforms in the government’s reservation policy for jobs.

“Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is in constant touch and is personally monitoring the evacuation of the students and people from the state stranded in Bangladesh,” an official told Northeast Live.

The Government of Meghalaya is in constant touch with the Bangladesh High Commission and the Indian High Commission, the Land Port Authority, Dawki and Exporters Association and has taken up all possible measures for the safety of all.

It has activated a helpline number- 1800-345-3644 for those who may require help due to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.

Additional SP of Jowai, Hiwot Rymbai has been deputed as a nodal officer at the border and Executive Officer of Land Port Authority Dawki, Thomas has been deputed as assistant nodal officer.

Those requiring assistance can also contact Additional SP of Jowai, Hiwot Rymbai at 91-9615 716 153 and Thomas Jas at 91-8415 060 802.

Meghalaya shares a 443 km boundary with Bangladesh.

The situation in Bangladesh continues to be volatile. Over 32 people have died so far as anti-quota student groups clashed with armed police in Dhaka. Internet shutdown continues.

Bangladeshi students set ablaze the reception building of the country’s state broadcaster BTV on Thursday, a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appeared on the network urging for calm.

Rights groups such as Amnesty International, the United Nations and the United States have urged Bangladesh to protect peaceful protesters from violence.

Meanwhile, PM Hasina’s government has ordered schools and universities to close indefinitely as police step up efforts to bring the country’s deteriorating law and order situation under control.
