Cachar SP Numal Mahatta informed that the three militants had entered from a neighbouring state and were trying to cross over to another adjacent state

The encounter of three suspected militants in Bhuban Pahar in Barak Valley along the Assam-Mizoram border has raised several questions about the presence of armed men from neighbouring states entering Assam and using Cachar as a transit route.

Cachar SP Numal Mahatta, speaking to Northeast Live, informed that the three militants had entered from a neighbouring state and were trying to cross over to another adjacent state.

“Yesterday, we received a tip-off from a credible source regarding the movement of suspected militants at Krishnapur road under Kachudharam Police Station. A police team was dispatched to the location, and check-posts were set up there,” Mahatta said.

“The police team successfully apprehended three armed men- Lallungawi Hmar and Lalbikung Hmar of Lakhipur, Assam, and Joshua hailing from Manipur’s Churachandpur while they were on the way towards Bhuban Hills. When interrogated, the trio revealed that their 7-8 counterparts were still taking shelter at Bhuban Hills with a huge cache of arms to carry out some subversive activities in the Assam Manipur border areas. Subsequently, a special operation was launched to apprehend the suspected militants,” the SP added.

“A police team was dispatched early this morning to Bhuban Hills, which came under a sudden attack with bullets raining from all sides. The police team took positions and launched a counterattack, in which three militants received bullet injuries. Though they were taken to the hospital, doctors declared them dead on arrival,” SP Mahatta informed.

He further said that the other militants escaped by taking advantage of the thick forest. The police have launched a search operation to capture them.
