UDP says HSPDP pulling out of RDA. Here is what HSPDP President said

Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday said, "HSPDP have expressed their unwillingness to continue with the RDA.

Is there a rift within the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) in Meghalaya? According to United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has decided to sever ties with the regional alliance.

Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday said, “HSPDP have expressed their unwillingness to continue with the RDA. The decision has only been made verbally, so the two parties will need to meet formally and settle the issue once and for all.”

When asked if it will hamper UDP, he said, “You might say so. We might think it is better to work in different ways since we could not reach 5 percent of the total vote this time. Probably UDP alone could have crossed 5 percent without HSPDP support. So these are all in the realm of probability.”

However, HSPDP President KP Pangniang has firmly denied these reports, stating that the RDA will hold a meeting soon to discuss all such issues.

He emphasised that any decision regarding the alliance would be made only during official party meetings.

Pangniang said that the party never had any intention of pulling out of the RDA and that the alliance would be meeting soon, possibly on July 18-19, to address these concerns.

RDA chairperson and UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh meanwhile refrained from making any statements amidst the controversy.

While no written communication has been issued, the ongoing verbal talks have fuelled rumours of a possible rift. The upcoming RDA meeting is expected to clarify the situation and determine the future of the alliance in Meghalaya.

The RDA consists of the UDP and the HSPDP and they had recently fielded a common candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
