Assam Floods: CM instructs DCs to ensure swift and effective relief and rehabilitation for affected people

To ensure proper supervision, Cabinet Ministers will be stationed in various districts for the next three days.

Amid the worsening flood situation in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired an all important meeting with District Commissioners of all the districts and took stock of the status in their respective districts.

The meeting focused on ensuring swift and effective relief and rehabilitation for flood-affected victims.
In the meeting, the Assam Chief Minister instructed all the DCs to work on a war footing to ensure that there is immediate implementation of relief measures, rescue operations and rehabilitiation process.

Another key takeaway of the meeting was that, CM Sarma in a clear instruction said that there must be uninterrupted flood relief supplies, with direct communication with the Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary of the Revenue Department for advance capital if necessary.

Besides, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in the meeting also emphasized on measures to prevent water from re-entering affected areas and make adequate arrangements for pumping out water from inundated areas.

Regarding the CM has directed for alternative arrangements for pumping water at sluice gates and drainage systems, and repair of broken bridges and deployment of geo bags to prevent water from re-entering rural areas.

A few other directives issued by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to the DCs include-

  • Provision of storage water and essential supplies.
  • Comprehensive survey of flood damage for timely intervention.
  • Adequate supply of sanitary napkins, clean drinking water, and child food in relief camps.
  • Efforts to secure rehabilitation grants for flood-affected individuals by August 15.
  • Timely preparation and submission of detailed reports by DCs.

Apart from this, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has constituted a team which includes members of his cabinet, who will be stationed in various flood affected district.

As such Ranjit Kumar Dass will look after Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts, Jogen Mohan will be in Charaideo, Bimal Bora in Sivasagar and Jorhat, Ranoj Pegu in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur, Pijush Hazarika in Biswanath, Sonitpur and Darrang, Ajanta Neog in Golaghat, Atul Bora in Nagaon and Morigaon, Jayanta Malla Baruah in Majuli and Nandita Gorlosa in Udalguri.

Informing about this, the Assam CM in a post on X wrote, “The entire State Govt stands with the people of Assam in this hour of crisis. To ensure proper supervision, I have requested Cabinet Ministers to be stationed in various districts for the next three days.
Myself and a team of Ministers will also visit Barak Valley for 3-4 days soon.”

As per the ASDMA, at total of 16,25,089 people have been affected in 29 districts so far. 8 human lives were lost on Wednesday that took the total death toll due to the calamity to 46.

17 animal deaths have been reported in the Kaziranga National Park owing to the deluge.
