Instead of schools for learning, are Navodaya Vidyalayas becoming schools for ragging in NE?

At least 11 ragging cases were reported from 2011 to 2024 in JNVs which are directly under the Education Ministry.

Are Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) which are directly under the Education Ministry, becoming the ragging hotspots? Are these schools, instead of being seats of learning fast turning into schools for ragging in the Northeast? Well it seems so as at least 11 cases of ragging have been reported from JNVs located in different states of northeast from 2011 to 2024.

In fact, in 2013 and 2022, total six cases of ragging were reported, 3 each in both the years in JNVs located in different states of the region.

It is 13 years back in 2011, Abhijit Bhuyan, a student of class 8 of JNV, Lakhimpur was allegedly physically assaulted and mentally tortured by at least 10 senior students. Later all 10 students were suspended for their heinous act.

In 2013, as many as 16 students of classes 7 and 8 were severely beaten up by their seniors in Class 12 at JNV, Ransaidram, at Basugaon town in Chirang district of Assam. One of the students got his shoulder fractured in the horrific incident. An FIR was filed by the family members of the victims at Basugaon Police Station in this regard.

In another incident at JNV Monacharra in Hailakandi district of Assam on August 25, 2013, 2 students of class 9 and class 8 were allegedly beaten up by a group of senior students of class 12. Following this, out of fear, as many as 19 students of class 9 fled from the campus. As many as 11 students of class 12 were suspended for 10 days for their alleged involvement in the crime.

In the same year at the Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy in Chimpu, 25 kilometers from Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, 20 students fell prey to ragging by senior students.

In 2014, a group of 5-6 students of class 10 at JNV Kamarguri, in Chirang district allegedly thrashed 24 students of classes 8 and 9 injuring them severely.

In 2018, as many as 3 students of 6th standard at the JNV, Doimukh under Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh were ragged by a group of 9 students of class 7. Later all 9 accused students were suspended for their act.

On March 15, 2022, an incident of ragging was reported from JNV, Tuinom in Churachandpur district of Manipur. 3 senior students allegedly thrashed a class 9 student in what was later alleged to have been covered up by the school authorities. Due to the incident, the victim has reported physical assault as well as mental torture.

On September 25, 2022, when a group of students of classes 6 and 8 were in deep slumber, a group of students from class 12 allegedly woke them up assembled them in an open hold and thrashed them black and blue.

Unable to bear the brunt of the trashing, one of the junior students jumped into a well but was saved at the nick of time.

In the same year, as many as 22 students of JNV, Doomordolong in Moran, Dibrugarh district were suspended for a period of six months for assaulting a pregnant teacher in the school premises.

In 9 September 2023, at least 5 class 10 students were ragged and beaten with bamboo sticks by a group of senior students of JNV, Nalbari in their school hostel. Some of the students received injuries in their bodies, raising serious concerns about the safety and well-being of the students of the

Reports came in late yesterday that 24 students of class 8, in JNV Bordumsa in eastern Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district were allegedly mercilessly beaten by their seniors, injuring them severely. When the 24 boarders went for lunch at around 2 pm after their school was over, a group of 5 students of 11th standard allegedly tortured them physically and mentally making this the 11th case of ragging in JNV schools in northeast since 2011.
