Cycling for Tibet’s Freedom: 64-Year-Old Jamyang Tenzin Embarks on 5th Solo Cycle Rally from Tawang to Delhi

First Published: 28th September, 2024 19:18 IST

The journey is aimed at raising awareness about Tibet's fight against Chinese oppression.

In a remarkable show of dedication to the Tibetan cause, 64-year-old Jamyang Tenzin from Dehradun has set off on his fifth solo cycling rally. Starting from Tawang, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso, Tenzin’s journey will cover hundreds of kilometers as he pedals towards New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

This rally comes at a poignant time, coinciding with the 37th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising in Lhasa on September 27, 1987, where young Tibetans protested against Chinese occupation.

Throughout his journey, Jamyang aims to raise awareness about the deteriorating situation in Tibet, where the Chinese government has been systematically closing down Tibetan educational institutions. These actions, he believes, are a deliberate attempt to erase Tibetan identity, language, and culture.

Jamyang will also highlight China’s expansionist agenda, particularly its renaming of locations along the Indo-Tibetan border, which poses a direct threat to India’s security in the region. He hopes to bring attention to the urgent need for India and the world to recognize the importance of the Tibetan issue, not just as a cultural struggle but as a matter of geopolitical significance.

In addition to raising awareness, Jamyang’s rally aims to inspire young Tibetans to stand firm in defending their cultural heritage and identity. He calls on them to embrace their role in the movement for Tibetan freedom with unwavering determination and courage.

Moreover, he seeks to appeal to the Indian government and its people, urging them to lend greater support to Tibet’s just cause and to recognize the pivotal role Tibet plays in India’s border security.

This solo cycle rally is part of Jamyang’s lifelong commitment to Tibet’s freedom struggle. His previous rallies have covered impressive distances, including routes from Dharamshala to Bodhgaya, Bylakuppe in Karnataka to Dehradun, Dekyiling to Delhi, and Ladakh’s Khardung La to Dharamshala.
