At a time when Sikkim grapples with flash floods and landslides caused by relentless heavy rains over the past 10 days, the Pakyong district authorities have issued an urgent alert, warning that the water in Nimtar and Mangthang villages and surrounding areas in Pakyong is contaminated and not suitable for drinking.

Tashi Chophel, SCS, District Collector-cum-Chairman of District Disaster Management Authority, Pakyong said that water samples from Nimtar, Mangthang, and the neighbouring areas were collected by the State Health Department and tested at the microbiology lab of STNM Hospital. The results showed that the water was contaminated and not fit for the consumption.

Therefore, Tashi Chophel advised the general public to refrain from using water from these areas.

Heavy rains have been lashing through the state since June 10 leaving a trail of destruction and devastation. So far 9 people have been killed while several are still missing.

Roads and bridges have been washed away and rivers in spate are threatening more destruction.

North Sikkim is one of the worst affected areas as several roads have been cut off. Tireless efforts by BRO, Army, NDRF and SDRF helped evacuate all tourists stranded in North Sikkim due to floods and landslides.
