Nature’s fury in Sikkim: Govt steps up measures to prevent outbreak of water borne diseases

While Sikkim is struggling hard to overcome issues posed by incessant rainfall resulting in floods and landslides, it seems that the Himalayan state is now facing an emerging health challenge. Post the devastation unleashed by nature’s fury, there seems to be a reported outbreak of water borne diseases.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Sikkim Health Minister GT Dhungel said, “People have been suffering from diarrhoea and other stomach related ailments because of monsoon related issues. Taking all these things into account, we will see how preventive measures can be taken up to safeguard our people and prevent such outbreak of epidemics. We discussed this with all the medical experts and doctors, PHED engineers involved in water supply.”

Asked as to what steps are being taken to ensure availability of medicines, since roads have been blocked at various places, Dhungel informed, “Yesterday when we had a meeting the Chief Minister emphasized that all necessary equipment, medicines and whatsoever is required for day-to-day problems relating to health which needs to be dealt with, for that we shall be well-equipped. Medicines, consumables and other necessary items have to be stocked in concerned districts, even in the sub-divisions or even the headquarters. Directives have already been given by the Chief Minister so that we have necessary medicines and other items to deal with any case that crops up.”

Worth mentioning, Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang on Wednesday had convened a meeting at his official residence in presence of officials of the Health, Rural Development Department and PHED to address potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as jaundice and Hepatitis A+ during the monsoon season.

In a post on social media, the Sikkim CM sharing details of the meeting said, “During the meeting, I highlighted the importance of spreading awareness through Information Education Communication (IEC) programs. These initiatives will be carried out extensively in rural and urban areas, with active participation from the Education Department. The programs aim to educate the public about bacteriological contamination, various waterborne diseases, and health risks, and promote safe hygiene practices, sanitation facilities, and proper waste management.

Clear directives were given to PHE and RDD departments to ensure regular treatment of all water sources, rigorous surveillance, and prompt response to reports of waterborne diseases. It was emphasized to enforce effective waste management practices, specifically to prevent littering in water bodies like ‘jhoras’ and other sources.”
