Assam’s tea body ABLTMA to launch “Eurofins Agro Laboratories” in Dibrugarh to maintain production standards of tea industry

First Published: 16th June, 2024 13:50 IST

The Assam Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturer's Association has around 200 bought-leaf factories across Assam.

With an aim to ensure quality control and maintain production standards for Assam’s renowned tea industry, the Assam Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturer’s Association (ABLTMA) will launch a mobile residue testing laboratory, named “Eurofins Agro Laboratories”, at Teamafco in Alimur, Dibrugarh.

Assam Minister for Industries, Commerce, Public Enterprises and Cultural Affairs Bimal Borah will inaugurate the laboratory on June 17, 2024.

This development marks a significant advancement in the region’s agricultural practices and supports the ongoing growth and reputation of Assam tea.

The association has around 200 bought-leaf factories across Assam.

The ABLTMA’s move to launch Eurofins Agro Laboratories came weeks after it withdrew its decision to shut down bought leaf tea factories in the state.

It was supposed to shut down bought leaf tea factories in the state because of the excessive use of pesticides by small tea growers.

The members of the association said that tea produced by using non-compliant green tea leaves had severely affected the quality of Assam tea.

Non-compliant green tea leaves are referred to as those leaves that do not comply with the guidelines of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and break norms by using banned pesticides.

Later, after receiving assurances from the All-Assam Small Tea Growers’ Association and the Upper Assam Small Tea Planters’ Association that they would not use prohibited pesticides on their estates, it withdrew its decision to shut down bought leaf tea factories.
