First Published: 4th June, 2024 21:44 IST

When Mukul left along with the 12 MLAs, they took away all the party workers, Vincent Pala said.

Meghalaya Pradesh Congress committee President Vincent H Pala on Tuesday admitted the mass exodus of legislators from the party on Meghalaya after he took over the presidentship of the party has caused him setback.
Pala was asked about his thoughts on this and in his response the former Congress MP said, “Definitely because like I said it takes time to groom a leader. When Mukul left along with the 12 MLAs, they took away all the party workers. I have seen in Garo Hills everybody left, we got the oppurtunity to revamp the party. So definitely they left the party, but now we have the time to groom. I am very confident that in 2028 we should come with good numbers of MLAs, because we will be strong in Garo Hills also, and we will reposition ourselves here (Khasi and Jaintia Hills).”
“Maximum of the people left us from Khasi and Jaintia Hills, maximum of the MDCs were taken away, in Jaintia Hills they left us at the last moment, which demoralized the voters, party workers and created the perception that the Congress is not strong enough. So definitely these costed us,” Pala added.
Vincent Pala of Congress who won the Shillong Lok Sabha seat 3 times in a row – 2009, 2014, 2019 lost to Ricky AJ Syngkon of the VPP. Ricky Syngkon polled 5, 71, 078 votes while Pala polled 1,99,168 votes. Pala lost by a margin of a whopping 3,71,910 votes.
