Conrad Sangma-led MDA govt was never serious on ILP issue: VPP chief Ardent Basaiawmoit

He also said that the state government is just trying to “throw away” the responsibility at the centre.
The vocal Meghalaya opposition party Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) has accused the Conrad Sangma-led MDA government of deliberately delaying the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.
The Meghalaya Assembly in 2019 unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to implement ILP in the state under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873.
VPP chief Ardent Basaiawmoit said that the resolution passed by the Conrad Sangma government back in 2019 was never aimed at implementing ILP in Meghalaya.
He also said that the state government is just trying to “throw away” the responsibility at the Centre. However, the state government does not need to seek permission from the Government of India to implement ILP.
Speaking to media, Ardent Basaiawmoit said, “Do you think that the resolution passed by the government is to really bring ILP into our state? It is an attempt to throw away the responsibility at the centre. They just want to get away from the responsibility. The state government should not have passed that resolution if they really wish to implement, ILP. They should have simply passed or issued a notification to implement ILP. It is not necessary for the state government to seek formation from the Government of India to implement ILP. It is already there.”
The VPP chief further said that the Meghalaya Government passed that resolution instead of contesting with the Centre for removing the word ‘Khasi Jaintia’, from the preamble of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873..
“They passed that resolution instead of contesting with the government of India for removing the word ‘Khasi Jaintia’, from the preamble of the Bengal is Eastern frontier. They decided to keep mum on that issue and passed a resolution as if the ball is lying with the central government,” said Ardent Basaiawmoit.
What is ILP?
The ILP is a special permit required by residents of other regions of the country to enter Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
