Sikkim Assembly Elections 2024 Results on June 2: Here’s all you need to know about key candidates, parties and party positions

Teacher-turned-politician, incumbent CM, PS Tamang is contesting from Soreng-Chakung & Rhenock.

A total of 146 candidates, including Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, his predecessor Pawan Kumar Chamling, former India Football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, and Tamang’s wife Krishna Kumari Rai are in the fray for 32 assembly constituencies. 
 
Tamang and Chamling are contesting from two assembly constituencies each. 12 women candidates are in the fray. 

The SKM and SDF have put up candidates on all 32 assembly seats followed by BJP (31), CAP-Sikkim (30) and Congress (12). 

4.Key Candidates: 

  1. Teacher-turned-politician, incumbent CM, PS Tamang is contesting from Soreng-Chakung & Rhenock.  
  • He is the sitting MLA of Poklok-Kamrang. 
  • A former SDF leader and a 6-time MLA, 56-year-old Tamang turned a rebel after the Rolu picnic incident of 2009 when the SDF government had issued a show cause notice to the government employees who had gone for the picnic.  
  • In 2013 he resigned from SDF, formed Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) in 2013 in Soreng, West Sikkim and became its President.  
  • In the 2014 Sikkim Assembly polls, SKM won 10 of the 32 Assembly seats.  
  • In 2019, Tamang usurped the CM’s chair from Pawan Chamling by winning 17 seats. 
  • Tamang won the Chakung seat thrice – 1994, 1999 and 2004 as SDF candidate.  
  • He won the Upper Burtuk seat in 2009 on SDF ticket and in 2014 he won the Upper Burtuk and the Namthang-Rateypani seats as SKM leader.  
  • He won the Poklok-Kamrang seat in the 2019 by-election.  
  1. Five-time former Chief Minister, 8-time MLA and SDF President74-year-old, Pawan Kumar Chamling is seeking a record ninth term as MLA.  
  • He is contesting from two assembly constituencies, Poklok-Kamrang in Namchi district and Namcheybung in Gangtok district. 
  • He is the sitting MLA of Namchi-Singhithang, his home constituency. 
  • Chamling is facing former bureaucrat and SKM nominee Raju Basnet, besides two women candidates, Pooja Sharma (BJP) and Severine Rai (CAP-Sikkim) in Namcheybung assembly constituency. 
  • In Poklok-Kamrang assembly constituency, the SDF patriarch is locked in a quadrangular contest with Bhoj Raj Rai of SKM being the other main candidate. 
  1. Bhaichung Bhutia: The SDF vice president and the former India football captain is trying his luck from Barfung seat in Namchi district. His main opponent is SKM’s RD Bhutia.  
  1. Citizen Action Party Chief Ganesh Rai is contesting from Melli and Chujachen. 
  1. Krishna Rai, wife of CM PS Tamang is contesting from Namchi Shinghithang. 
  1. Sikkim BJP President D R Thapa is contesting from Upper Burtuk. 
  1. Sikkim Assembly Speaker Arun Upreti is contesting on SKM ticket from Arithang.
