Often seen as a state where football is much admired, Meghalaya will now be looking forward to creating some of the best cricketing talents for the nation in the near future.
Aspiring cricketers in the state now can opt to hone their skills as a new indoor cricket facility will be coming up very soon at Madam Kurkalang, Lumdaitkhla village in Ri Bhoi District.
Although the base for the pioneer project was laid by BCCI president Roger Binny and Secretary Jay Shah in a closed door function on Sunday, the Meghalaya Cricket Association held a special programme to mark the event.
Cabinet Minister AL Hek, dignitaries including Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) president Naba Batacharjee, MCA Honorary Secretary Gedion Kharkongngor, Padmashree awardee Silbi Pasah, MCA Vice President Rayonald Kharkamni, Lumdaitkhla village Headman S.T Rympei as well as other prominent individuals were present on the occasion.
Sharing his thoughts on the development, minister AL Hek said, “This will give immense benefit not only to the state, but particularly to the young cricket lovers. I was there yesterday, BCCI honorary secretary clearly told the MCA, that it should not import players from outside the state and it should produce all the players from Meghalaya. That is a beautiful spirit already registered in our minds and hearts. BCCI president Roger Binny too stated the same thing-that we should not import players from outside the state. We have to produce our own players. For doing it, I request all the students and cricket lovers, that earlier we used to play cricket to pass our time, or get some sort of entertainment, but today all sports particularly football and cricket have become a big profession. But I am telling you that if cricket, football or any other sports is taken seriously, it will be completely a paradigm shift. Therefore, I appeal all cricket lovers, I want all of you to build a brand, you have to give efforts, you have to slog to build a brand.”
On the other hand, Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) president Naba Bhattacharjee shared what he conveyed to the BCCI president and the BCCI honorary secretary. Bhattacharjee said, “Meghalaya is one of the few states which has started playing with local players only. He (Roger Binny) was so happy, I said we have reached the Elite Group of Ranji Trophy playing with only our local players. We have the talent and MCA is here to provide you the infrastructure. We are committed but disciplined and your rigorous training and starting young, we have been telling all our family members from different districts and everyone have started. There is a wave and I can see it coming that in the next 5 years, if not in the boy’s section, in the women’s section we will have one or two players representing the country.”
