Culprits will be booked under NSA: Nagaland Govt on extortion, illegal tax issues raised by industry bodies

Amid the ongoing indefinite shutter down called by Confederation of Nagaland Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) and the Dimapur Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), apex industry bodies of Nagaland, the Nagaland Government today assured strict action against those involved in extortion, intimidation or any other illegal activities against the business community of Nagaland and urged the industry bodies to call off their shut down.
“DCCI and CNCCI are requested to call of the indefinite shutter down. The State Government assures taking necessary action in all the cases of extortion/illegal activities by multiple groups in the state,” Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton who is also the Home & Border Affairs Minister of Nagaland appealed to the business community in the state who had kept their shops and business establishments shut since May 27 on behalf of the Nagaland Government.
The assurance and the appeal comes two days after the CNCCI started the indefinite shutter down and the DCCI through a 5 point Charter of Demand sought clarification from the Neiphiu Rio-led Nagaland government if multiple taxes imposed by certain underground groups on the business community is legal or illegal.
The industry bodies alleged that these groups were imposing multiple illegal taxes, intimidating businessmen and traders operating out of Nagaland, member of the business community were getting extortion calls, threats and summons.
“The issue of multiple extortion and harassment meted to the business community of Dimapur by the various groups was listed as one the Agenda in the Cabinet Meeting held on 26th April, 2024. The Cabinet after thorough deliberations on the matter has decided to inform the Chairman, CFMG/CFSB immediately through the Commissioner, Nagaland and Director General of Police, Nagaland to enforce strict implementation of ground rules of cease fire and that the culprits will be booked under NSA and detained outside the State,” Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton said in an official statement.
Responding to the DCCI’s Charter of Demands, the DCM said in the statement, “The State Government after carefully examining the Charter of Demands of DCCI and the response/ clarification by the Chairman CFMG/CFSB, is of the opinion that the activities mentioned in the DCCI letter are against the relevant laws of the land and invite appropriate legal action.”
The Deputy CM and DGP Rupin Sharma had addressed the media on the issue earlier today.
