Meghalaya: HYC upset over illegal settlement opposite F&ES station in Shillong, seeks eviction of illegal settlers

First Published: 26th April, 2024 19:14 IST

Highly concerned over the "illegal settlement", the HYC took the matter in it's own hands and in fact carried out an inquiry through spot verification.

The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has expressed it’s strong reservations over the “illegal settlement” of around 80-100 families in a plot of land, which as per the pressure group belongs to the Shillong Cantonment Board.

Highly concerned over the “illegal settlement”, the HYC took the matter in it’s own hands and in fact carried out an inquiry through spot verification. Soon the HYC as stated could find that the families were illegally staying without necessary approval of the concerned authorities.

This prompted the HYC to submit a representation to the CEO of the Shillong Cantonment Board Ayush Maurya seeking his intervention.

Throwing more light into the matter, HYC president Roykupar Synrem said, “HYC yesterday we have conducted an inquiry into the illegal settlements that are there opposite the Fire and Emergency Station at Iewduh. During our inspection we found that there are about 80-100 households, who are illegally settling in the lands belonging to the Shillong Cantonment Board, as per our information. WE have also found that these people are illegally settling there without any authority, neither they have got any permission from the Cantonment Board or any other authority whatsoever. So after finding out that yesterday we came to meet the CEO with the demand that the Shillong Cantonment Board take prompt action, so that these illegal settlers are evicted from this land.

However, it was conveyed to the HYC that the plot of land actually belongs to the Defence Estate Officer.
“During a meeting today with the CEO, we have been informed that the particular plot of land, though it falls under Shillong Cantonment Board, the authority which look after this plot of land is the Defence Estate Officer, whose main office is in Guwahati. The CEO has also informed us that there is a litigation going on regarding this particular plot of land. But then he does not know the exact status of the case.
What we have told the CEO, because today we came with a representation to the CEO. We have requested him that he should reply to our letter, what are the steps that we feel are needed to be taken, so that we know whom to approach.

He has assured us that he will reply to our letter. Based on the reply given by the CEO, HYC will take necessary steps,” Roykupar Synrem informed.
