African Swine Flu hits Mizoram, sale of pork in affected districts prohibited

The Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department has directed the farmers to bury the dead pigs with lime powder.

Mizoram’s capital city Aizawl and two other districts – Champhai and Saitual have been hit by the African Swine Fever (ASF), a highly contagious and deadly disease that affects pigs. 

So far 174 pigs have died and 68 have been culled as a precautionary measure to contain the spread. 

Following the outbreak, sale or slaughter of pigs and the export or import of pork have been strictly prohibited in the affected areas. 

A number of villages and localities have been designated as contaminated areas.

As per reports, between May 8, 2023 to April 22, 2024, 1213 pigs died from ASF in Mizoram and 1009 pigs were culled.

Deputy Director of Disease Investigation and Epidemiology, Dr. M. Zohmingthangi, said that since ASF has already spread throughout the state, outbreaks of less severity continue to take place.  

In 2021, the ASF outbreak wreaked havoc in Mizoram, resulting in substantial losses in its pig population. The state has incurred a loss of Rs 534.42 crores during the first and second waves of this disease.
