LS Polls 2024: MP Naba Kumar Sarania’s nomination for Kokrajhar seat cancelled

First Published: 21st April, 2024 14:01 IST

Kokrajhar will be going to polls in the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled to take place on May 7.

Two-time Lok Sabha MP from Assam and Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) president Naba Kumar Sarania’s nomination for the Kokrajhar parliamentary constituency was cancelled by the Returning Officer today.

It may be mentioned here that Sarania filed nominations for the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency on April 19, despite the Gauhati High Court’s ruling, which declared Sarania’s Scheduled Tribe-Plains certificate invalid and making him ineligible to fight elections.

The court had dismissed a petition challenging an order which cancelled the ST certificates issued to Sarania.
The High Court had also passed a judgment that Sarania does not belong to the Bodo Kachari community, following which the two-time MP submitted nomination as a Rabha.
However, his nomination was cancelled by the Returning Officer today.
Sarania will not be able to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha election from Kokrajhar.
Kokrajhar will be going to polls in the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled to take place on May 7 along with Guwahati, Barpeta, and Dhubri.
Naba Sarani is a two-time Kokrajhar MP. He won the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 as an Independent candidate. He won the seat again in 2019 Lok Sabha polls as a GSP candidate. He is the founder and president of GSP.
