Arunachal Assembly Polls: Democracy has been murdered, says NCP’s Likha Saaya after miscreants attacked his convoy

The incident happened at Piyong village under the Namsai police station last night.

The stage is set for the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections as every political party is leaving no stone unturned to consolidate their position further.

However, amid the hectic politicking Arunachal NCP president and party candidate for the Namsai seat, Likha Saaya and his supporters were attacked by unidentified miscreants at Piyong village under Namsai police station last night.

Although no individual was injured in the attack, miscreants vandalized vehicles used by the NCP supporters during their election campaign.

But NCP candidate from Namsai, Likha Saaya has squarely blamed his opponent and sitting Namsai MLA Chau Zingnu Namchoom for allegedly orchestrating the attack.

Briefing newspersons, Saaya alleged, “We were on our official campaign tour yesterday and in the Yhome circle we have our senior and prominent leader of the Khamti community, I was invited as a guest to his residence. I went for dinner there alongwith my team. A good discussion with senior citizens ensued thereafter where they asked me about how I am preparing to fight the elections and my vision for the 47-Namsai Assembly constituency. We had a prolonged discussion.

During this time, everyone sensed that there was chaos outside, stones were being pelted. Those persons involved in this began to kick the entrance gate of the house, shouted my name. This happened when we went there to seek advice and blessings of our elderly.”

Blaming Chau Zingnu Namchoom, NCP Arunachal president said, “Irrespective of any party, it is our responsibility to respect and honour our seniors.

But from yesterday’s incident, I feel that my opponent Chau Zingnu Namchoom has no respect for the seniors and does not value the society. On April 3 too a similar incident had occurred.”

Giving a brief of as to what happened yesterday, Saaya also accused the police of missing from the action when the NCP leaders came under attack.

The NCP Arunachal president said, “When we were holed up inside the house and I called the police, the cops asked me to bring the leader of the mob inside and convince him. Nothing can be done because the boys who are brought from rehab are always intoxicated.

The police, Magistrate and other officials had come yesterday and conveyed us that we will have no problem from moving out of Piyong village under Namsai police station. But we were apprehensive and sensed that miscreants will target us again. We refused to proceed further but the authorities assured us full protection. My party people assumed that I might be stuck somewhere due to some reasons and tried to reach out to me. But the police stopped them midway. Instead of stopping the miscreants they stopped our people. As we moved out Piyong and travelled less than a kilometre the miscreants began pelting stones.

When stones were pelted at us, the police personnel were missing from action.

We learnt that the miscreants on board vehicles laden with stones had come Zingnu Namchoom’s residence. This was pre-planned well. Democracy has been murdered here.”

Not only this, in a shocking allegation Saaya said that youths from rehabilitiation centres are being used for carrying out such attacks in lieu of money.

“What we learnt soon after the incident was that youths from rehabilitation centres are being brought and paid money (to create chaos). A wrong army is being raised for doing all the wrong things,” Saaya further alleged.
