In a big breakthrough, the Assam Police busted a gang of robbers who were operating in Guwahati disguised as taxi drivers.
The Guwahati Police had swung into action after at least 4 complaints were filed by victims since November last year.
Guwahati Commissioner of Police Diganta Barah informed about the arrest of the 5 notorious robbers who primarily chose passengers leaving for any location outside Guwahati.
The accused robbers have been identified as-
Majnur Ali alias Goria, Rahim Ali, Amir Hamza, Tafazzul Ali and Lutfur Rahman.
Sharing more details about the gang’s modus operandi, the Guwahati Police Commissioner informed, “Mostly during the evening when people are on their way to any location outside Guwahati, they usually wait for bus or any other mode of transport at the Jalukbari Rotary or on the Jalukabri Flyover. What happens next is that these robbers come in small vehicles (Alto or Swift Dzire) and ask the commuters as to where they are going to. If the person tells them about his or her destination, then these people (gang of robbers) also tell that they are going to the same destination. Soon the commuter takes them into confidence and gets into their car.
On their way, they stop for a cup of tea and then they drug the innocent passenger also by adding sedatives to the cup of tea offered. After that they loot all the valuables from the passenger. Sometimes they also get involved in use of force against the passenger and extract valuable information such as ATM PIN, PIN for online payment app, besides others.
But if the victims raise voice further, then they physically assault and throw the passenger out of the vehicle.”
Asked as to when and how probe into the case began, Guwahati Commissioner of Police Diganta Barah said, “4 cases were filed in this connection. One was filed November last year, followed by another in December, one in January this year and the most recent one filed 4 days ago. Unfortunately, one such victim has already lost his life.”
“Further probe is underway, anyone else involved with this gang will be arrested, ” the Guwahati Commissioner of Police further said.
