Assam Cong MP Abdul Khaleque withdraws resignation after meeting Sonia Gandhi

Sitting Barpeta MP Khaleque had quit Congress on Mar 15 after he was denied ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls

Days after resigning from the party, Assam Congress Lok Sabha MP from Barpeta, Abdul Khaleque on Wednesday reversed his decision to quit the Congress party following a meeting with Sonia Gandhi earlier in the day.

Addressing the media MP Khaleque said, “I had a discussion with Madam Sonia Gandhi and other party leaders, and I have full confidence and trust in them. They further assured me that they would look into my concerns.”

In a letter addressed to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge,  Khaleque stated, “I am glad that the central leadership of the party reached out to me because of which I could have a fruitful discussion with Shri K C Venugopal ji, GSO and later had the blessings of our Honourable CPP Chairperson, Smt. Sonia Gandhiji. Strengthening Congress is the need of hour, hence I withdraw my resignation and wish to work under your and Rahul Gandhi’s able leadership.”

 It is on March 15, Khaleque had tendered his resignation from the party after being denied a ticket from the Barpeta seat for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

A two-time (2006 and 2016) MLA from Jania, Khaleque is the sitting MP of Barpeta. He won the seat in 2019.
