Lok Sabha elections 2024: TMC fields Zenith Sangma, Mukul Sangma’s brother, from Tura

The TMC (Trinamool Congress) announced the name of former Meghalaya minister Zenith Sangma as its candidate from the Tura Lok Sabha seat.

The Tura Lok Sabha seat is presently held by National People’s Party (NPP’s) Agatha Sangma. She won the Tura seat twice – 2009 and 2019.

“AITC under the guidance and inspiration of Chairperson Mamata Banerjee, we are pleased to announce the Meghalaya candidate from the Parliamentary Constituency of Tura (ST) seat,” the party said in a post on X.

Zenith Sangma is the brother of TMC leader and former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. Zenith Sangma was the sports minister of Meghalaya from 2013 to 2018.

He has been the Rangsakona MLA for three terms – 2003, 2013 and 2018 as a Congress candidate. Zenith Sangma joined the TMC in 2021.

In the 2023 Assembly elections in the state, Zenith Sangma lost the Rangsakona seat by 788 votes.

Congress has fielded Saleng Sangma from the Tura seat. BJP is yet to announce its candidate for this seat.
