Former minister and SDF leader Girish Chandra Rai resigns from party, likely to join BJP today

Ahead of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Sikkim, former Minister and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) party leader, Girish Chandra Rai has resigned from the party yesterday.
According to sources, he will join the BJP today in Singtam.
Rai submitted his resignation letter to the party chief Pawan Chamling.
His resignation letter read: “I am writing to tender my resignation from primary member of the party. I wanted to express my sincere gratitude for all the responsibilities entrusted to me during my time with the party. Thank you for the opportunities and experience I gained while serving in various capacities.”
Rai had won from the Melli constituency three consecutive times from 1994 to 2004.
Earlier this week, SDF released its first list of 6 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Five-time former Chief Minister, 8-time MLA and SDF President Pawan Chamling would be contesting from Namchi-Singhithang seat for the 8th time.
He is the sitting MLA of Namchi-Singhithang, his home constituency. He has been winning the seat since 1985, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019.
